Just like that, a story we published today has to be updated. As described, D Jeff Petry’s reunion with his old team, the Montreal Canadiens, was short-lived, as he has already been flipped to his home state club, the Detroit Red Wings. In exchange for Petry (whom the Canadiens acquired as part of the Erik Karlsson trade with a 25% salary retention by Pittsburgh, and will have a further 50% retained by Montreal), they will receive D Gustav Lindström and a conditional fourth round pick in 2025 (the pick will be either Detroit or Boston’s contingent upon which is lower).
There is some merit to this trade on both ends. Petry will be coming in very cheap for Detroit and adding value as a player that I discussed in my earlier published Montreal article, while they relinquish a draft pick they could afford to cut ties with. For Montreal, they are getting a young defenseman with some untapped potential and many years ahead of him and some draft stock even if it isn’t much, both good for a rebuilding team. Perhaps a somewhat unexciting trade, but one we were blindsided by only the timing of (the possibility of the trade occurring has been floated around), and has some positives on both ends.
