The Colorado Avalanche signing Jonathan Drouin to a one year/ $825,000 contract has massive upside potential at a low-risk cost. He is coming off a series of several consecutives seasons as a member of multiple lackluster Montreal Canadiens teams. Last season, Drouin scored 29 points in 58 games, posted a 30:17 takeaway to giveaway ratio, and only took 18 penalty minutes. Drouin finished the season with an even-strength corsi-relative of 2.0% and a Fenwick relative of 0.8%, showing he had an positive impact on controlling play while on the ice. A change of scenery may help Drouin find his game again from his peak year in Tampa Bay. In the 2016-2017 season he posted .73 PPG and shot at 11.5% playing with Stamkos and Kucherov. According to Evolving Hockey, Drouin posted a GAR of 9.3 that season. Also of note, is that In his 9 year career, Drouin has yet to see his production fall below .46 PPG.
Drouin can be expected to post 45 to 55 points, and he can slot anywhere in the top 9 without being a liability on either end of the ice. With a deep roster that is top-heavy with superstars, an experienced coaching staff, and a new opportunity, Drouin will is going into a situation where he should be able to thrive, and if all goes well, help propel the Avalanche on a deep playoff run.
