While this game concluded in a similar manner to the last performance for MCLA against Framingham State Rams on Thursday (a 5-3 defeat with the last goal being surrendered on the empty net during the last ditch effort), the arc was different in this matchup against the Lancers and the takeaways were varied, as well. This was, in part for me, due to a more intimate and uninterrupted viewing experience, but there were also just certain things on display that didn’t appear to be previously. As a whole, the forward group looked perhaps (not necessarily for certain) their most aggressive at throwing pucks on net this season and the defensive core also looked more willing to pinch and take chances than usual, which is good considering the skill level of some of the blue liners. If I were to give superlatives, I would particularly highlight the entire first power play unit for their tenacity and ability to create in this game. The forwards at large had a big part in nearly leading a comeback. However, I’d also like to particularly highlight defensemen Shane Green and Alex Ferris for their overall games. In fact, I might have had more of an eye on Ferris than anyone on the ice, truth be told. The Enfield, CT native’s ability and willingness to make his presence known on the offensive side led to him tallying an assist in this game. In his own zone, he particularly impressed me with his backwards skating and sound defensive positioning, as well as his exceptional checking ability. Between these assets, he possesses a game that would make Ray Bourque beam with pride, and he will only improve with further cultivation in the NCAA environment.
This defeat does put the group in a precarious spot as they end the Fall semester with a 2-8-1 overall record and a 0-6-1 intraconference record in MASCAC. However, knowing the hunger and determination of this group and how they seem to show signs of learning how to gel and form chemistry, I imagine the Spring could very well bring bring a focused group that goes on a tear and makes a playoff push. Let it be pointed out, also, that (any potential weaknesses aside) luck, in many different ways, played a part in the last two losses and I additionally expect that starting goaltender Mathew Gover (who was scratched due to illness) will return ready to take on the challenge of backstopping the team on a clutch, last stretch run. We’ll find out starting Thursday, January 4th.
