In another memorable early season matchup, PWHL’s New York franchise would pull off a three goal comeback in an intense game against the number one team Minnesota. Minnesota acquired an early lead in the first period off of a Lee Stecklein goal, with assist from Michelle Cava. Kelly Pannek would score several minutes later to go up 2-0 with an assist from Susanna Tapani. In the second period, New York would draw a penalty, leading to Alex Carpenter scoring her third goal of the season on an assist from Ella Shelton and Abbey Rogue. In the third period, New York would get their second power play and Jesse Eldridge would convert on the assists from Alex Carpenter and Ella Shelton. The game would go to overtime. Several minutes in, Grace Zumwinkle had a great scoring opportunity with a penalty shot but Corinne Schroeder would deny her. Emma Woods would end up scoring the game-winning goal on assists yet again from Ella Shelton, and Jade Downey-Landry. Despite being outshot 41 to 29, New York would come away with the victory.
With Alex Carpenter’s two points, she is second in scoring in the league with five points while teammate Ella Shelton leads the league with six points after her three assist night. Corinne Schroeder would have another phenomenal outing, stopping 39 of 41 shots. New York’s power play was exceptional, going two for two while Minnesota’s power play struggled, going zero for three.
New York (who is currently in third place) will be playing the number two team Montreal on Tuesday night. It’ll be a great matchup, as both teams have put on offensive clinics while also having top end goaltending. It should be exciting to see if Alex Carpenter and Ella Shelton will continue scoring and stay at the top of points in the league. Upon this setback of Minnesota’s first loss on the season, they will look to rebound against the fourth ranked team Ottawa Wednesday night.
