If you follow women’s college hockey, then you have heard the name Gwyneth Philips. She is currently in her 5th season at Northeastern and continues to add to one of the most elite resumes we’ve seen. In the 2019-2020 season, she posted a 5-0-0 record in her seven appearances and recorded three shutouts. In 2021-2022, she posted a .75 GAA and a .964 save percentage and she went 6-1-0 in 11 games. The 2022-2023 season was her crowning achievement where she led the entire country with 34 wins, a GAA of .87 and a save percentage of 96%. She went 34-3-1 in 38 games for the Huskies and had 10 shutouts (2nd best single season shutout total in Northeastern history). She also had a career high in saves against Ohio State in the NCAA Frozen Four with 50 saves. Philips set a school record for most games played (38), wins (34), and minutes played (2272).
Philips was a Hockey East All-Academic Team member in the 2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2022-23 seasons. In 2023, she was National goaltender of the year, Patty Kazmaier Memorial award top 10 finalists, First team All-American, Hockey East goaltender of the year, Hockey East first team All-Star, Third Team All-USCHO, the Bertagna Award winner (Beanpot’s best goalie), and Hockey East All-Tournament team. This season, Philips has played 25 games and has posted a .955 save and a GAA of 1.12 and has a record of 15-9-1.
Philips’ numbers speak for themselves as a testimony to her ability and profile. She has excellent athleticism, positioning, and durability and can keep her team in any game. I see her being a top pick in the PWHL’s draft next season. She is the top goaltending prospect and will be a massive asset to whichever team drafts her. It is also worth noting that she gloves righty, which will be interesting for shooters. She will assuredly be a difficult matchup at the pro level.
