On Tuesday night, the defending Beanpot champions, the Northeastern Huskies (15-9-1) took on the Boston University Terriers (11-11-2) in the prestigious Dunkin women’s 45th Beanpot Tournament finals at the TD Garden in Boston. This would be a historic night for women’s hockey as it is the first women’s hockey game ever played in the TD Garden and took in front of an energized crowd of 10,633. This figure set a mark for most ever in attendance at a women’s hockey game played in New England.
The first period was deadlocked at zero, with both teams were evenly matched with Boston University taking seven shots on goal and Northeastern with eight. The Terriers started to dominate in the second period with offensive zone puck possession and would outshoot Northeastern 12-9. Every time the Huskies would sustain offensive zone time, penalties would ultimately kill their momentum including a roughing minor on Northeastern netminder Gwyneth Philips, 15:29 into the 2nd period. Late in the second period, Abbey Marohn and Kylie Jones would complete a tic tac toe pass that would lead to Skylar Irving driving the net and beating BU’s goalie Callie Shanahan for a 1-0 lead with 27 seconds left.
The ice looked tilted for the majority of the third period in favor of Northeastern. The Huskies dominated BU in the neutral zone for the majority of the period leading to several quality scoring chances that were snuffed out by Shanahan. Northeastern would outshoot the Terriers 12-5. All game, Northeastern’s Gwyneth Philips came up with timely saves and was excellent with her rebound control and directing pucks away from forechecking Terriers. However, BU would end up getting one by Philips in the last minute of the third period with the extra attacker from an absolute bomb from Catherine Foulem on a beautiful seam pass from Sydney Haley.
Just like the earlier game between Boston College and Harvard, the game would go to overtime. 33 seconds into overtime, Katy Knoll would end up feeding Skylar Irving on a 2-on-1 and the Huskies would win the game. This would be Huskies’ head coach Dave Flint’s 5th Beanpot and his second time winning the tournanent in consecutive years. Gwyneth Philips would win the Bertagna Award for the 2nd straight year (best goalie in the Beanpot). Skylar Irving would win best player of the Beanpot as she netted two goals, her 6th and 7th on the season. This win marked Northeastern’s 19th tournament championship.
