Vanisova’s two points and Chuli’s lockdown debut launch Montreal to number one!

Heading into Wednesday night, the top two teams in the PWHL, Minnesota( 4-0-1) and Montreal (3-1-1), would play each other a second time. The first matchup was Minnesota’s home opener where Grace Zumwinkle stole the show and scored a natural hat trick to defeat Montreal 3-0. Both teams thus far have demonstrated consistent star power and excellent goaltending, proving to be the top two teams in the league.

4:12 into the first period, Montreal’s Laura Stacy would finish a one-timer from Tereza Vanisova that would clip a Minnesota player and knuckle into the net beating Nicole Hensley glove side. At the end of the first period, Minnesota would out shoot Montreal 9 to 8. Minnesota would go on to dominate Montreal in the second period in shots and lambaste them 23 to 11 finally scoring 11:51 into the second period. Michaela Cava would bury a rebound from a shot from Liz Schepes to tie the game at 1. For the third consecutive period, Minnesota would outshoot Montreal, this time 14 to 7 but unfortunately for them, it wouldn’t be enough. 13:54 into the third period, Tereza Vanisova would score a rebound goal off of a shot from Maureen Murphy. Montreal goaltender Elaine Chuli would hold off Minnesota making 45 of 46 saves in her debut in the PWHL to get the win.

One of the storylines in this game was the matchup of two superstars Marie Philip Poulin for Montreal and Taylor Heise for Minnesota. The notable highlight between the two would be Poulin throwing a huge open ice hip check on Heise. With this victory, Montreal goes to number one in the league and Minnesota suffers their first regulation loss. Montreal will be playing the number four ranked Ottawa on Saturday and Minnesota will look to bounce back against the number three ranked Boston, who just beat Ottawa 3-2.
