
On Friday night, the 5th and 6th ranked PWHL hockey teams would face off for a third time. New York won opening night 4-0 January 1st and Toronto would win the 2nd game 3-2 January 5th. The first period in the third matchup would remain scoreless, Toronto would outshoot New York 9 to 6. 16:31 into the second period Natalie Spooner would cut across the front of the net and snipe the puck five hole beating Shroeder to put Toronto up 1-0. Toronto would continue to dominate New York in shots 14 to 4 in the second period. New York would rally in the third period out shooting Toronto 9 to 7 but their hopes would diminish when Natalie Spooner would score her second goal of the game on the power play from Jocelyne Larocque and Maggie Connors. Kristen Campbell and Toronto would get the shutout, Kristen Campbell’s first in the PWHL.
Natalie Spooner now has five goals and both of Toronto’s power play goals. She is third in the league in goals behind Grace Zumwinkle and Marie-Phillip Poulin, who have six each. This game snaps New York’s star forward, Alex Carpenter’s three-game point streak. New York netminder Corinne Schroeder had another strong outing stopping 28 of 30 shots and is 2nd in save percentage in the league with 94.6%, behind only Chuli of Montreal in her one appearance. New York will be getting ready to play Minnesota Sunday and Toronto will be playing Minnesota in a week.
