New York’s All-Stars finish comeback of the year

Coming into Sunday’s matinee matchup, the bottom two ranked teams, New York(11 points) and Ottawa(10 points)would play each other for the first time. Special teams would be an interesting matchup, coming in Ottawa was the number one ranked powerplay and New York sat at number two. New York would start Corinne Schroeder in net with the second highest save percentage and Ottawa would play the netminder with the second most minutes, Emerance Maschmeyer.

7:37 into the first period, Ottawa’s Emily Clark would feed a pass to the opposite point where Aneta Tejralova would rip a Howitzer of a blast through a screen from Gabbie Hughes beating Schroeder glove side. Ottawa would lead in shots 15 to 10 after the first period and Ottawa would be 0-for-1 with the extra attacker. The second period would be more of the same with Ottawa outshooting New York 13-6 and dominating with their fast transition game. New York’s penalty kill would come up big killing Ottawa’s two powerplays and Schroeder would keep it a one goal deficit.

2:20 into the third period Ottawa would be rewarded off of a great takeaway and feed from Hayley Scamurra to Lexie Adzija, who would waste no time in burying it five hole. Ottawa would continue to dominate and draw a boarding penalty on Ella Shelton. On the powerplay, Emily Clark would feed it to Daryl Watts who would throw the puck into the slot and defenceman Savannah Harmon would skate up and hammer it top shelf to go up 3-0. This game looked dead in the water but New York  would rally and make several impactful defensive plays that would lead to goals. 14:54 into the third Jaime Bourbonnais would shoot the puck off the rush and Abby Roque would put the rebound home over a sprawling Maschmeyer.  44 seconds later Toronto would create another turnover, Chloe Aurard would feed the puck cross ice to Jesse Eldridge to create a 2-on-1. Jesse Eldridge would then slide it to Jade Downey-Landry and snipe it stick side bringing New York to within one. With the momentum swing, New York would get their second powerplay of the game off of a boarding penalty on Lexie Adzija. New York would have excellent puck movement on the power play, Jesse Eldridge would connect with Abby Roque across the front of the net. Roque would demonstrate excellent patience and out wait Maschmeyer and dish it back across the front of the net to Alex Carpenter to tie it 3-3. The home crowd was stunned, this epic game would head to overtime. 2:12 into overtime New York’s superstar, Alex Carpenter would score with a lightning fast rip off the rush through a defender to complete the miraculous comeback. The Ottawa home crowd were silent and in complete shock of what they just witnessed. All three of New York’s all-stars, Alex Carpenter, Ella Shelton, and Abby Roque collected a point on the overtime game winning goal and were monumental in the comeback.

For  New York it was a great comeback story, Corinne Schroeder had arguably her best game of the season stopping 39 of 42 shots. Alex Carpenter scored two significant goals and is in the league lead with 11 points. Abby Roque had her best performance of the season with a season high three points. Defenceman Ella Shelton is currently tied in second with Marie-Philip Poulin with nine points after the assist in overtime. On the flip side we saw more dominance from Ottawa’s all-stars. Savannah Harmon had a dominant offensive performance this weekend at the All-Star game scoring a hat trick. In this game she flexed her offensive ability again scoring her second goal of the season on the power play. Emily Clark had a solid 2-point night demonstrating her elite playmaking ability. Lexie Adzija has been the shining example of consistency, she has six points in seven games and has only been left off the score sheet once and it was against Montreal. This victory will be a huge morale booster for New York and for Ottawa they still have two games in hand with everyone except Boston.
