
Saturday’s game was the second showdown between PWHL New York and Boston at the Tsongas Center. The first matchup ended in favor of New York 4-1, Jade Downie-Landry scored a hat trick and Corinne Schroeder stopped 32 of 33 shots, while Soderberg gave up 3 off 13 shots and was replaced by Frankel. This time around, Boston would start Frankel and New York would again roll with Schroeder.
The first period would be a hard fought and even battle, with both teams having 8 shots a piece, but Emma Woods would break the stalemate with 5:01 remaining in the period. Jaime Bourbonnais blasted a shot on net, Frankel kicked out the shot but after several rebounds Emma Woods scored and took the 1-0 lead. Over the next two periods, Boston outshot New York 24-13 but like last time they played, they couldn’t solve Schroeder. Boston came close with about six minutes left in the third when Hannah Brandt slid the puck through Schroeder’s pads on a breakaway but Ella Shelton was in time to clear the puck off the goal line. With the extra attacker, Megan Keller launched a shot that beat Schroeder and the puck trickled into the net with 1:04 left in regulation.
2:28 into overtime, Alex Carpenter ripped a shot stickside topshelf and beat Frankel to win the game for New York. Jaime Bourbonnais and Emma Woods tallied assists on the goal, both registering two points in the game. With that goal, Carpenter is in the league lead with 12 points, 6 goals and 6 assists, she is posting 1.2 point’s per game, also 1st in the league. Corinne Schroeder stopped 34 of 35 shots, on the season she has stopped 66 of 68 shots against Boston and is second in save percentage (94.7%) and GAA (1.83). Frankel played well as usual for Boston, stopping 22 of 24 shots in the defeat. New York is trending in the right direction with their two consecutive overtime wins. Boston, meanwhile, is trending in the opposite direction with their 3rd straight loss. Boston has back-to-back matchups against Ottawa this week, so we will see if they can beat the other team that has struggled as of late.
