PWHL New York @ Toronto: Kristen Campbell’s lockdown in Toronto

Entering tonight’s matchup, both teams were red hot. Toronto won four consecutive games and New York three. Both teams played each other three times this season, with Toronto winning the last two games. Schroeder and Campbell would get the nod for their respective teams to start between the pipes. We would witness the top two league leaders Alex Carpenter (New York) and Natalie Spooner (Toronto) battle it out.

In the first period, New York got their legs under them first by creating several scoring chances in the period but Toronto would find their game and end up outshooting the opposition 12-9. However, at the end of the period the score would remain at zero. The second period followed the first period in a similar manner, as both goaltenders were stellar in net and Toronto again led shots on goal 11-9. Finally, 12:34 into the third period, Emma Maltais scored her second goal of the season and broke the deadlock. Maltais crashed the net while Blair Turnbull possessed the puck in the offensive zone.!Turnbull whipped the puck across the slot and hit Maltais who fired the puck past Corinne Schroeder. Desperate to tie the game, New York pulled Schroeder for the extra attacker within the last minute of the third period and threw everything they had at Campbell.  Alex Carpenter kept the puck alive on the boards and dished it to Emma Woods. She passed it to Ella Shelton who launched a rocket of a shot and tied it up at one with eight seconds left. Both teams took one shot on net before the overtime period ended and went to a shootout. Kristen Campbell was a brick wall and shut down all four of New York’s shooters. Natalie Spooner flexed her offensive ability scoring on both of her shots. She came in with speed and dangled the puck and buried it on her backhand. On the second goal, she skated in fast again but sniped it on her forehand.

Toronto has now won five consecutive games stemming from their 2-0 victory against New York on January 26th and Campbell has won six consecutive games, earning first star of the night in this victory. She has the longest current shutout streak in the PWHL at 121:20 and the most wins of any goalie with seven and the most shutouts with two. Both penalty kills were strong, as Toronto killed all five New York power plays and New York killed Toronto’s three. Alex Carpenter tallied another point totaling 15 points on the season. Toronto will play #1 Minnesota on Tuesday and New York will play Ottawa on Wednesday.
