One of my favorite signings this offseason was the two-year extension of PWHL New York’s goaltender Corinne Schroeder. She dominated on a defensively lackluster team in the inaugural PWHL season. Out of all of the goaltenders who started a minimum five games, she finished with the second highest save percentage in the league posting an impressive 93% in fifteen games, the only goalie with a higher save was Montreal’s backup Elaine Chuli. Schroeder was excellent much of the season, portraying poise, great athleticism, and consistency – Often keeping her team in the game despite a crazy shot disparity.
Before the PWHL, Schroeder had an impressive collegiate career, playing for the Boston University Terriers for four years and the Quinnipiac Bobcats for one. At Boston University, her stats got better and better with each season. In her Freshman season, she played in twenty five games and posted a 91.3 save percentage against a 2.51 GAA. Her Sophomore campaign in 18’-19, she played in thirty-two games and stopped 93.3% of shots while posting a 1.90 GAA. Junior year was her strongest season of the three where she played in twenty six games, stopping 94.3% of the shots she faced while having a GAA of 1.54. Going into her fourth year, she only played eight games before the season was cut short due to COVID. In the shortened season, she posted her lowest save percentage of 91.1 versus a 2.23 GAA. Schroeder would elect to go and play for Quinnipiac University, with whom she continued where she left off before the COVID affected season. In twenty-six games, Schroeder set career bests with a 95.1% save percentage and a 1.44 GAA. That year, she was a top three finalist for the best women’s hockey goalie of the year award. On September 25th 2021 against the Maine Black Bears, Schroeder became the first goalie in women’s college hockey to score a goal; after making a pad save, Maine mishandled the puck and it went into their own net, resulting in Schroeder getting credit for the tally. That year, Quinnipiac University would go to the NCAA tournament. They defeated the Syracuse Orange 4-0, marking Quinnipiac’s first NCAA tournament win and shutout. They ultimately would fall to the number one ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the quarterfinals in double overtime. However, Schroeder was a brick wall, setting a personal record with seventy three saves and carrying her team to double overtime. It was the most saves in a game in Quinnipiac women’s hockey and was tied with the 6th-most saves in a game in women’s college hockey ever.
The following year, Schroeder was signed by the Boston Pride in the Premier Hockey Federation. She didn’t miss a beat: In the first three games of the season she had three straight shutouts, with the streak lasting 183:15. With her fourth shutout coming in December, Schroeder set the record for most shutouts in a season in the PHF. She played in twenty-two games and led the Boston Pride to 1st place while posting an incredible 95.5 save percentage against a 1.67 GAA. With Corinne Schroeder’s collegiate and professional ice hockey career thus far, she has proven her goaltending prowess as well as her professionalism, consistency, reliability, and compete level. Looking at how good New York’s draft went, as well as the coaching hires, there is a lot to be excited about with PWHL New York. With Schroeder in net, there is a lot of promise in New York for the next two seasons.
