PWHL 2024-2025 GSAA Tracker

We’re back with another piece of more advanced analytics for the average PWHL fan, as the PWHL’s website still doesn’t publicly track and share GSAA. The value of GSAA, is much like Points per Game, it stands to measure a goalie’s nightly impact on their team relative to their peers by aggregating save percentage against the shot volume faced. A great example of how this works is shown below in the table from this season, as Gwyneth Philips and Corinne Schroeder were equal in save percentage, but with Schroeder facing 233 more shots than Philips, the total number of goals prevented was higher.

GSAA is not a perfect stat as it is effectively just provides additional context to Save Percentage, with GSAx (Goals Saved Above Expected) being the better statistic. However, GSAx is a difficult stat to track without significant shot data tracking, as it weighs the scoring probability of each shot based on historic context of all shooting locations. Eventually, I hope that a more robust stat tracking team will cultivate that data for a better PWHL fan experience.
