Black Stitch Hockey PWHL Production Model 2024-2025

2024-2025 Player Production Model cover featuring P/60 Stats by Black Stitch Hockey with a scenic background.

Well, the time has finally come as the 2024-2025 PWHL regular season has reached its conclusion. As all of the games have been played, I have all of the data to generate a complete and balanced production model based on the Bader system from Hockeyprospecting.com. Simply, after a series of calculations, every player is plotted on a curve based on how their offensive output measures to the rest of their position group in the league, which is why “F Rating” and “D Rating” have their own columns down below. The top players, relative to the league average scoring output, are assigned “Superstar” and “Star” ratings relative standard deviations against the mean. Meanwhile, “Replacement” level scorers are players in a position group who are in the 20th percentile of their position group, based on the 80/20 rule of statistics. Additionally, this time around, as opposed to my midseason and 2024 season recaps, I have included the NHL analytics stat P/60, as the PWHL doesn’t have it calculated publicly. P/60, or “Points per 60 Minutes” recalculates a player’s scoring efficiency at a greater level than PPG, as it calculates a player’s points against their Time on Ice per game, and gives a barometer of how many points a player would score in 60 minutes of ice time. Typically, this is divided by situation (Power Play, Even Strength, Penalty Kill) however, the PWHL does not publicly track or delineate situational ice time, meaning the number included below is “All Situations.” An additional note is that any player who was traded will not have a P/60 number in the table below due to limitations in the Macro I had used to calculate the data set.

  1. […] has come for yet another draft board. Last season, our NCAAW hockey production model (similar to the one we use for the PWHL) saw 9 of who we perceived as the 10 most likely draft eligible NCAA players to be selected in the […]

  2. […] Following this defeat and impending expansion draft, change was inevitable. On June 23rd, Courtney Kessel resigned from her position to take the coaching job at Princeton. At the end of July, the Fleet announced that Kris Sparre would be filling the role, with Danielle Marmer highlighting the importance of his experience at the AHL level. As someone who has followed his former team, the San Diego Gulls, closer than the average PWHL fan (I am an Anaheim Ducks fan), his ability to coach and develop players is impressive. Without veering too far off topic, Tristan Luneau, Sam Colangelo, Nikita Nesterenko, and Olen Zellweger’s development under his watch serve as a case study for how Fleet players could develop under his guidance. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that the only PWHL head coach with AHL experience is Ken Klee, who despite his salacious reputation, has been tremendous at developing young players (Dominique Petrie and Brooke McQuigge were two of the league’s most efficient players last season). […]
